  • Prepare

    • One goal in following Jesus is to PREPARE ourselves to encounter and follow Him daily.  The following practices train us to bring Jesus' life and presence into in our fast-paced lives.

    • Silence and Solitude
    • Presence of God
    • Humility
    • Sabbath
    • Bible reading
    • Fasting
    Silence and Solitude

    • Silence is the practice of attending to and listening to God in quiet.  Silence frees me from the distraction of noise, so I can be totally present to the Lord and open myself to God's presence.

Solitude is the practice of leaving people behind in order to enter into distraction-free time alone with God.

    Presence of God

    • Practicing the presence of God invites me to experience every moment as a gift from God.  I develop a continual openness to Christ's presence in me, and live alive to union with the Trinity.  It involves slowing, waiting, recollection, and journaling.

    Humility

    • The practice of humility is not thinking less of myself, but rather thinking of myself less.  Humble people let go of image- management and self-promotion.  They make others' needs as real and important as their own needs.  Humility includes secrecy, hiddennes, anonymity, and lack of display.

    Sabbath

    • The Sabbath is God's weekly gift of rest.  It is given for our delight and communion with God.  This practice is characterized by time for being in the midst of a life of doing.  It honors and adores the Trinity as the supreme treasure of life.  It includes practices of rest and retreat.

    Bible reading

    • Devotional reading of Scripture is the practice of prayerfully encountering and surrendering to the living God by attending to his Word.  It requires an open, reflective, listening posture alert to God's voice.  It is aimed more at a growing relationship with God than gathering information about God.

    Fasting

    • A fast is the self-denial of normal necessities in order to seek God on matters of deep concern for myself, others, and the world.  Fasting opens a place for prayer, as the physical awareness of emptiness reminds me to turn to Jesus, who alone can satisfy.
